Well, let's see. Ran around the base Friday (5 Km) and the geese were apparently hiding... didn't get to see any of the cute little critters. Spent Friday night shopping and cleaning... I'd been out of it kind of, all week, so I had to catch up. Saturday AM, well, I was supposed to run but I put it off until Sunday... I'm still worried about my right foot, and I thought a day of rest between one speed run and my long run would be good. Plus...
Well, Natsu, my Japanese friend out here, and I decided that since we'd never seen Cape Cod (well, I've been to the upper Cape, Falmouth and Wood's Hole) that we'd spend Saturday doing it. All I knew is that I wanted to see the outer beaches with their dunes and salt marshes and weird birds, but when she was flipping through a guide book, she found out about the whale watching in Provincetown, and said that she really wanted to go. Now, I've seen whales off of the various ships I've been on... also, dolphins, squid, and flying fish. Usually, they spot a whale, they announce it, you run up topside, and you see a back or maybe a fluke in the distance. Not really worth my three hours and $30. But I didn't have any better ideas, so we went to the Dolphin Fleet company on McMillan's Wharf and signed up.
Oh my God.
I actually lost count. I know we saw four finbacks (the second-largest mammal-type critter) but as for the humpbacks we were following, we saw two mom-and-calf pairs, and maybe fifty whales, close enough that we could see the baleen hanging off of their jaws as they raised their heads to swallow the fish and the hordes of seagulls tried to pull the fish out. Saw a bunch of New England cormorants, too... the Asian version is one of my favorite birds, and these looked the same, only smaller. Plus, damnit, it felt really really good to be out to sea again, even if I did have to pay for the privilege.
Today, worked for the morning, and then talked myself into running. Actually did pretty decent... 85:30 for 8 miles/ 13 km. I was shooting for 80:00 to 82:00 but that was still good for my first long run since November. Only seventeen weeks to go.
More later... it's late. Goodnight.
