So yesterday I was finishing up reading the Harry Potter book (aloud, of course) to jewfroart and drinking from a large glass of ginger ale while she was cleaning our kitchen. Now mind, I've been in the Navy for some time, and had my share of accidentally ingested chemicals, and I'm still (mostly) alive to type this. So when she suddenly stopped me and said "I think I might have got some 409 in the ginger ale, I picked it up and said "Well, it's just a little bit. I'll taste it if you did." So I sipped from it, and indeed tasted it, dumped out the glass, and went back into the living room where I was reading. About a minute later, a sudden wave of nausea and lightheadedness comes over me and I'm barely able to stand up. But I make my way into the kitchen, start drinking lots of water (initially from the same glass that had the ginger ale in it, which was stupid move #2) and after I've got about a quart in me, and still feel dizzy, sick, and a little sore about the throat, I told her to call 911.
I figured the 911 thing was overkill, and it was. I was mostly okay by the time they showed up, as long as I wasn't sitting down. They checked out the chemical, talked to me a little, and told me to keep drinking water and I'd be fine. The strange thing was that the 409 bottle had all kinds of safety instructions regarding what to do if it got in your eyes or if you had too much on your hands, but nothing about what to do if you drink the damn stuff.
On the bright side of things, I did eventually manage to finish the HP book. And that was the silly thing... when I thought I was going to pass out, all I could think of was "...but I haven't finished it yet..." Silly, I know, but the book is pretty damn good.
