Last night was pretty incredible. Well, for starters I had the day off, but I chose to spend it doing math homework... the part that I'm in right now, solving right triangles (given two bits of info about the triangle... three, if you count that it's a right triangle... come up with the other four) is kicking my ass. I actually burned out half of a pencil on one homework assignment alone. But the evening was better. Neko Case, whom I've been a fan of since hearing her on some NPR program in 2002, has been debuting her new album around New England and playing small shows to show off the new stuff. This was my first time getting to see her perform (I missed seeing her with the New Pornographers in Boston last fall) and I was more than impressed. Highlights... "John Saw That Number" "Deep Red Bells" a few of the new songs, and especially "Wish I Were The Moon." Her new album seems a lot darker than her last one, too, if that's possible. Mostly I was just impressed at how well she and her backup singer (Kelly, I believe) harmonized on stage... she's definitely not just a studio baby.
One thing about the stage setup, which was nothing but the instruments really, was a small case or old-fashioned beauty box on the stage just behind where Neko was standing. Most likely it just had tools, picks, strings, or other musical accouterments, but it was eating away at my friend Jodi, at least until she elbowed me and said "That's Neko Case on the stage!" I was giving her my best 'no shit' look when she said "Behind that red-haired lady playing guitar. That's Neko Case! Not her!" I guess that's not too far of a stretch, considering that 'Echo' of 'Echo and the Bunnymen' was their original drum machine.
More later... cleaning my room. Anyone want to help?
